Recycled Time The immediacy of pure existence can only be revisited as idealized and corrupted memories. Yet these three video selections, taken from a cyber-synaesthetic experience presented at the California Institute of the Arts, provide a bleeding edge, stroboscopic feeding frenzy for your central nervous system's hearty appetite. Very engrossing, often frightening and always beautiful, this tape is a wonderful endurance test for your psyche.
Song From The Forest A definitive work by a person described by musical anthropologist, D. Jonnson, "I was introduced to Louis Sarno during the winter of 1986 in Amsterdam by the expatriot provocatuer William Levy. At that time we were two men who had spent years drawn away from our home country by the psycho-acoustical phenomena of distant places . I had been researching the preindustrial epic-chants of Iceland, Louis had followed the vocals of the Pygmies into the rain forests of Central Africa. Both of us had found joyous animistic traditions. While I had arrived 20 years too late to record my sub-Arctic ancestral culture, Louis had found the archetypical primordial song alive and well in the rainforest. The music contained on BOYOBI, HIS FIELD RECORDING tape, is an anarchistic music; a democratic music; a living document of a happy mythopoetic world-view -- a rare rain-forest medicine for your ears. During the appearance of the Mokondi, (those verdant glowing benevolent phosphorescent creatures who frequently remind the village to party), the villagers are first reluctantly awakened from their huts in the early A.M.. with the eventuality of everybody dancing, singing, and drumming --finally propelling the chorus into the night. In the recordings on this tape, everyone not only seems to be in tune with each other, but as the jungle chirps and percolates the rain in the background, it becomes clear that they are also singing with the forces that surround them.
